Familiar Pages

I bought a new bible
I bought a new bible today
And I can’t help but pause
Am I walking in circles?
Will this stay on the shelf
Untouched, unmoved
Will, I?

I bought a new bible today
I put the bible chapter dividers on
Carefully placing them —
Is this for show?
Do I let go of all that I have witnessed?
Am I really convicted?

I bought a new bible today
I ran my fingertips across
Familiar pages
Remembering another life
Confused and frustrated
Not at Him
But at them

I bought a new bible today
I placed it on my nightstand
Like so many other books before
Most others were never read
Is this another empty step
Of spirit-u-what-ality?
What am I doing?

I bought a new bible today
Will I end up full
Of shit?
Am I going to repeat the
Same mistakes he made?
Will I be able to do something good for
Him and for my family?

I bought a new bible today
I felt the tears welling
Trying to feel God and trying to become
The thing I am being called to
